More than just a bookstore, Terra Kulture is a hub for all things culture in Lagos, Nigeria. Recommended by novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, as one of her favourite spots in the city, and location of choice for the launch of her acclaimed book, Americanah, Terra Kulture is a popular venue for locals, expats and visitors from around the world.

Opened in 2003 by lawyer, Bolanle Austen Peters, in the Victoria Island suburb of Lagos, Terra Kulture was founded on the need for a centre to protect and empower the uniquely Nigerian culture within a society that had been heavily impacted by centuries of close involvement with foreign powers, and 60 years of colonial rule. The bookstore sells African literature and books about Nigeria, the restaurant sells Nigerian food, the art gallery features more than a thousand of pieces of Nigerian art, and more than 10,000 people have taken classes in the language centre, which teaches classes in the Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba languages.

As the centre grows, new facilities have been added. In 2009 an auction house was opened, which now hosts regular art auctions (one of only two art auction houses in the country), and in 2017 a 400-seat theatre was announced, to provide a new state of the art venue for film and stage performances. Widely recognised as one of the leading culture institutions in Nigeria, the centre has received testimonials and book readings from internationally acclaimed homegrown literary figures like Adichie and Sefi Atta, and foreign celebrities such as Forrest Whitaker and Ben Stiller have visited the centre. Terra Kulture also receives repeat visits from students from some of the world’s most eminent universities.

Sundays are an ideal day to visit Terra Kulture, with launches of art exhibitions and theatre performances often taking place then; however, the centre is open 7 days a week.
